JESUS CHRIST'S BIBLICAL WORLD VIEW
Introduction:
"The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and RECEIVE IT, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred." (Mark 4:14-20)
"Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE ENGRAFTED WORD, which is able to save your souls." (James 1:21)
"For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when YE RECEIVED THE WORD OF GOD which ye heard of us, YE RECEIVED IT not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe." (1 Thessalonians 2:13)
"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever." (1 Peter 1:23)
Let us here examine Jesus Christ's Biblical world view and believe as the Lord believed concerning His Word:
1. The Lord Jesus Christ taught that every word of Scripture proceeded from God
"... Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)
2. The Lord never corrected or criticized Scripture, even though He did not have the original autographs.
"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." (John 17:17)
3. Jesus pre-authenticated the New Testament writings as Scripture.
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. ... Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you." (John 14:26; 16:13-14)
4. Christ Jesus accepted the Old Testament Jewish canon, but rejected the Apocrypha.
"And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me." (Luke 24:44)
5. He taught the doctrine of the preservation of Scripture.
"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." (Matthew 5:17-18) "And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail. ... Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away." (Luke 16:17, 21:33)
6. He taught that the Old Testament Scriptures pointed to Him.
"And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. ... And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me." (Luke 24:27, 44)
7. He taught that man will be judged by God's Word.
"And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." (John 12:47-48)
8. He taught the absolute authority of Scripture.
" ... Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?" (John 10:34-36; cf. Ps 82:6)
9. He taught the entirety of the Old Testament :
He believed in the Genesis account of creation (Matthew 19:4-6; Mark 10:6-8).
He believed the Flood of Noah was universal (Matthew 24:37-39).
He believed Abraham was a historical figure (John 8:56).
He believed Sodom and Gomorrah were literal places (Matthew 10:15; 11:23-24).
He believed Lot's wife was actually turned into a pillar of salt (Luke 17:32).
He believed God gave the Israelites manna from heaven (John 6:31,49,58).
He believed Jonah and the whale were historical (Matthew 12:39-41).
He believed Moses was the author of the first five books of the Bible (Matthew 8:4; John 5:46; 7:19).
He believed in David's authorship of the Psalms (Matthew 22:43).
He believed Daniel was the author of the book of Daniel (Matthew 24:15).
He believed in the unity of the book of Isaiah (Matthew 13:14-15; Mark 7:6; John 12:38-41).
10. He knew the Jews had a history of rejecting God's Word.
"Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered." (Luke 11:47-52).
11. The Lord Jesus scolded the Sadducees for their ignorance of Scripture.
"... Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God." (Matthew 22:29)
12. Christ the Lord promised blessings for those who believe the Scriptures and cursings for those who add and take away from His word.
"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." (John 5:39) "I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Revelation 22:16-19)
Conclusion:
Those who claim to be followers of the Lord Jesus Christ ought to believe and hold the same high view of Scripture that the Lord Himself held. Do true Christians hold any other view?
Let all who reverence the name of the LORD reverence also His holy Word!
"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." (Exodus 20:7)
" I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." (Psalm 138:2)
"For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven." (Psalms 119:89)
"For there are three that BEAR RECORD in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. ... He that believeth on the Son of God hath THE WITNESS in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not THE RECORD that God gave of his Son." (1 John 5:7, 10)
